New AHGBI 2025 Publication Prize – open until the 24th December 2025

Membership of the Association of Hispanists

Membership of the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland is open to all research-active Hispanists resident in Great Britain or Ireland who have a current research interest in the languages or cultures of Iberia (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, Basque), Latin America, or in related aspects of Hispanic, Lusophone or Latin American subjects. Hispanists living overseas who are former members of the Association, or are British subjects or Irish citizens, and who continue to be research active, qualify for membership. To be considered for membership, all applicants must be nominated by two current members of the AHGBI.

Annual subscription rates

  • Full rate for members with a salaried teaching or research post: £40
  • Discounted rate for research students, language assistants and others who do not hold a full-time teaching or research post: £20
  • Discounted rate for members over the normal retirement age: £20

Applications for membership can be made at any point during the year, but will only be approved on a bi-annual basis (spring and autumn).

To submit an abstract for the annual conference, you must either be a current member or have submitted a membership application to the Membership Secretary. Please note that acceptance to present at the conference is conditional upon your membership being approved by the trustees.

Membership is required in order to apply for funding, support, awards, and participation in association schemes. We encourage you to apply for membership in good time to ensure eligibility for these opportunities.

All members of the AHGBI benefit from the following:

  • Preferential rates for registration at the annual conference.
  • Attendance at the AGM during the annual conference.
  • Eligibility for a variety of funding and support programs offered by the association.
  • Participation in the Mentoring Scheme.
  • Joining the AHGBI mailing list.

How to apply for membership:

  • Complete the application form below and e‑mail or post it to the Membership Secretary.
  • All requests for membership will be collated by the Membership Secretary, and will be taken to the Trustees for their approval every autumn and spring. When your membership has been confirmed, you will be sent details of how to pay the annual subscription. For members with UK bank accounts, the normal method is by Direct Debit. Please do not send a cheque with your application.
  • If you are a UK taxpayer, please sign a Gift Aid form so that the Association can reclaim 25% of the value of your subscription each year. Your Gift Aid donations are vital to contribute to the award of AHGBI grants and the organization of our research activities. Please download the form below and send it to the Treasurer at the address shown on the form.
  • All members outside the UK, including Ireland and other euro-zone countries, should pay their membership subscription via PayPal. To do so, no credit card is needed. The treasure will contact you to arrange this.
